Hangzhou Climate, Geography and History 2019-03-20


Hangzhou enjoys a subtropical, monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The weather is changeable and generally warm, humid and rainy. The average temperature is 16 degrees Celsius (60.1 degrees Fahrenheit), and annual precipitation is around 1,500 millimeters. January is the coldest month of the year with temperatures averaging 3.5 degrees Celsius (38.3 degrees Fahrenheit). July is the hottest month of the year with temperatures averaging 29 degrees Celsius (84.2 degrees Fahrenheit). 


Hangzhou leaps into spring in late March with average temperatures ranging between 14 degrees Celsius (57.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Spring time in Hangzhou, whether rain or shine, provides unique views across the city and its surrounding areas and is a renowned time of year for an array of colourful flowers and fresh air.




Summer lasts for three months from June to August. The average temperature ranges from 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 degrees Fahrenheit) to 29 degrees Celsius (84.2 degrees Fahrenheit). Bundles of lotus flowers swinging in the breeze, is a spectacular sight worth seeing during this time.



Late September sees the arrival of autumn — the most golden season. Enjoying temperatures ranging between 17 degrees Celsius (62.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and 24 degrees Celsius (75.2 degrees Fahrenheit), autumn is the most charming season offering pleasant weather, which is neither too cold nor too hot. It also boasts a full moon, tidal bore and sweet smelling osmanthus.     



In late November comes winter, which is not as cold as other parts of China. January is the coldest month with the average temperature ranging between 3.3 degrees Celsius (37.94 degrees Fahrenheit) and 3.6 degrees Celsius (38.48 degrees Celsius). Lingering snow on the Broken Bridge is one of Hangzhou’s traditional top ten views.



Hangzhou is situated in the northwest of Zhejiang province, China, residing in the south-central portion of the Yangtze River Delta, and at the southern end of the Grand Canal. Its administrative area extends east to the coastal plain near Hangzhou Bay, south to Shaoxing city and Jinhua city, west to the mountainous parts of Anhui province, and north to Huzhou city and Jiaxing city. The sub-provincial city of Hangzhou comprises of eight districts – Shangcheng,  Xiacheng, Jianggan, Gongshu, Xihu, Binjiang, Xiaoshan, and Yuhang. Three county-level cities namely: Jiande, Fuyang, and Lin'an, and two counties Tonglu and Chun'an. The total area of Hangzhou City is 16,596 square kilometers, and it has a population of 8.7 million.







In 222 BC (the Qin Dynasty)


Hangzhou  was established by the name of Qiantang County.

Since then Hangzhou has existed as a city for 2,200 years.

In 893 BC (during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period)

Hangzhou was selected to be the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom.

Hangzhou has been the capital of Wuyue Kingdom for 893 years. Named Xifu or Xidu at the time.

In 1129 (the Song Dynasty)

Hangzhou was chosen as the new capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (960–1279)

It served as the capital of the Southern Song for 152 years. It was called Lin’an back then.

In 1927

Hangzhou City was officially founded.


In 1949

The People's Government of Hangzhou was founded, and Hangzhou serves as the capital of Zhejiang Province.



As a national cultural and historical city it has existed for about 8,000 years, since the time of the Kuahuqiao Culture which is the earliest known Neolithic culture in eastern China.
