Fireflies light up Hangzhou’s Summer Nights 2019-06-04
When was the last time you saw fireflies? People who live in busy cities seem to have forgotten these little flashes of light. In Hangzhou, however, there are places where you can see thousands of fireflies flying in the forest, which is a scene that lights up the city’s summer nights.

Wuyun Hill, there is a secret corner full of peace and tranquility. It is a totally isolated from the bustling city. Walking all the way to the north from the parking lot at the entrance of the Bamboo-Lined Path at Yunqi, you will see a dark track in a bamboo forest. Exploring deeper and deeper you will be amazed by the flickering of lights brought on by these magical fireflies.

At the beginning of June, and because of the hot weather, the number of fireflies is increasing, and they are everywhere in the bamboo forest as well as along the hiking track on
Wuyun Hill. Several hundred miles from the spot is a B&B, which is a hot spot for guests who come in search of the fireflies. Some of the guests bring along professional photographic equipment and some of them pay a visit with their children. When June comes, many regular customers call the B&B and ask to book at firefly season.

Why is there such a vast number of fireflies in Bamboo-Lined Path at Yunqi? According to an entomologist from , fireflies need dark and pollution-free environments, and with clear water and high humidity the forests in Hangzhou are the perfect dwelling places for these magical creatures.

Where else can we find fireflies? In fact, there are other places where we can see the little flashes of light.

The east of Xixi Wetland Park develops a wonderful “Valley of Fireflies” with its perfect natural environment and advantageous resources for fireflies. For the safety of visitors and the greatest expedition, the only way to the viewing spots is by boat. During nightfall, boats will sail slowly into the deep of Xixi Wetland and embraced by the colorful lights that flicker in the air, sounds of astoundment can be heard in the air.

Jingshan is one of the best places for taking a good rest in summer. You can sip a cup of tea and listen to the “Chan” scriptures sung in Jingshan Temple, which is extremely relaxing. When night time comes, you will see thousands of shining stars in the sky and those little flying “stars” outside the temple and along the Jingshan hiding track are known as the city’s fireflies.
