“Underwater Forest” in the West Lake 2018-10-10
With a forest area of 1,652.49 million mu, you can certainly say that Hangzhou is a forest city, and if you look closely you will find an "underwater forest" hidden in the West Lake.

The water area of Maujiabu is the origins of the underwater forest. In 2011, the demonstration project of the West Lake aquatic plant community was launched. Maojiabu was the first place for aquatic grass to be planted in the West Lake. Every day, a team of professionals came to trim the weeds, restock the plants, and drive away the fish. The larger fish tend to eat a lot of water grass, so a fence on the water was installed to keep them out. Once the young fish grow up, they too will be "moving out".

After years of meticulous care, the West Lake has given Hangzhou an "underwater forest". At the end of spring, the aquatic plants will enter their growing season. The hotter the weather is, the faster they will grow. And now it’s the time when the “underwater forest” is in its utmost luxuriance. Aquatic grass is like a water purifier making the water cleaner. The water purity is also a territory mark of aquatic grass. Some of the aquatic plants are like centipedes and some are like feathers. Groups of fish and shrimp drill to-and-fro, in addition to the spiral lions, mussels, water dobsons and other small animals that can only be found in places with plenty of aquatic grass and good-quality water, which is good evidence that the West Lake water is of a high quality.

Every year, the seeds of aquatic plants drift with the waves and fall all over the West Lake. Aquatic grass at Maojiabu, Yuhu Bay and Turtle Pond is the best. West inner lake (west of Su Causeway) is almost entirely covered with aquatic grass. Aquatic grass at the north inner lake (north of Bai Causeway) is about 20,000 square meters in coverage. You can see them when you are close to the shore of the lake.

So, when you visit the West Lake, don't forget to look at these “underwater forests”.
