Yang Mengying 2017-02-28
According to history experts, since its formation West Lake has a time-honoured history of over two thousand years and during the period, there are three people must not be forgotten, they are Bai Juyi, Su Shi and Yang Mengying.

Since the late Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), West Lake had entered its decline phase and most of the water area had been enclosed by magnates and noblemen. As a result, silts began to pile up in the lake and West Lake gradually deteriorated into a swampland. The situation remained for near a hundred years and didn’t change until the arrival of the new governor- Yang Mengying in 1503. Yang Mengying was from Sichuan Province and had served as the governor of Hangzhou for seven years. During his term, he obtained the imperial approval to improve the condition of West Lake and under his unremitting effort, West Lake was once again restored its prosperity. If it wasn’t for Yang Mengying, it’s highly possible that West Lake may have disappeared in history and only left us with regrets. The deeds of Yang Mengying dredging West Lake, however, irritated local magnates and noblemen and he was transferred elsewhere which directly lead to his retirement and his return to his hometown.
