West Lake Osmanthus Festival 2017-03-23

Sweet osmanthus, an evergreen tree native to China, has been grown in China for about 2,500 years. It was chosen as the city flower of Hangzhou (one of China’s five osmanthus producing areas) in 1984. Because of its fragrance, ornamental and medicinal value, it enjoys high popularity amongst Hangzhou locals and has become an indispensible part of Hangzhou culture.

The over-one-month festival is held when osmanthus flowers are in full bloom. During this period, the air around West Lake is heavy with its sweet scented perfume. "Sweet Osmanthus Rain at Manjuelong Village" (满陇桂雨) is the highlight of the festival and it’s also one of the “Ten Scenes of West Lake (西湖十景)”. On the heavily dewed mornings, osmanthus flowers fall with the wind and are as fine as rain drops. People walking in the clusters of osmanthus trees, will be immersed in the osmanthus rain and its delicate fragrance. As if to acknowledge another important cultural icon,  the Festival combines the culture of Osmanthus with the culture of tea.

During this wonderful festival, there are all kinds of activities and events that the foreign tourist can get involved in, such as appreciating sweet osmanthus and food made of osmanthus, drinking tea, watching shows and painting exhibitions etc. There is never a dull moment.

Time: mid September -- late October
Venue: Manjuelong Village (满觉陇村), and Hangzhou Botanical Garden (杭州植物园)
