Hangzhou Public Bicycle Project Honored International Award
From June 11 to June 16 local time, the International Ashden Week was being held in London, the UK, during which, Hangzhou public bicycle service project has been awarded “International Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel.”
The full name of "The Ashden Awards" is Ashden Sustainable Development Energy Awards. Founded in 2001, the Ashden Awards are a globally recognized as a mark of excellence in the field of green energy. The Ashden Awards aim to uncover and reward creative enterprises and projects in the UK and developing countries, which play a vital role in boosting the development of the renewable energy usage and improving the energy efficiency, and benefit the society, economy, and environment. As the winner of International Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel in 2017, China Hangzhou public bicycle service project is the largest public bicycle share scheme in the world.
Hangzhou public bicycle service project is an indispensable part of Hangzhou city’s “Five in One” public transportation system which consists of rail transit, public buses, taxis, water buses and public bicycles. Initiated in May 2008, Hangzhou currently has 85,800 public bicycles which have been used for over 700 million times. 96 percent of its usage is free of charge. In the meantime, it provides both theoretical and technical supports to China’s 200 cities and areas in developing their own public bicycle project and played a significant role in solving urban transportation issues, relieving congestion, promoting energy-saving and emission-reducing, and reducing pollution etc.
