Hangzhou’s Nine Landmarks Besides West Lake 2017-08-21

Every city has its symbol with Beijing’s symbol being the Great Wall, Shanghai’s being Lujiazhui, Chengdu’s being the steaming-hot hot pot and Hangzhou’s being West Lake. But besides West Lake, there are other nine places that deserve to be symbols of Hangzhou.


Qiantang River Bridge 钱江一桥

The world-famous Qiantang River Bridge was the first two-tiered railway and highway bridge designed by Chinese. Eighty years have passed and it still stands firmly over Qiantang River.

Chunyang Road 淳杨线

In Hangzhou, there is the newly-born romantic Chunyang Road boasting of scenery which is more breathtaking than that of the famed Route 66 of the US. Along the 52 kilometers road around the Qiandao Lake, one can feast on picturesque scenery boasting of verdant mountains and crystal-clear water and it is a must for cycling enthusiasts.

Daming Mountain 大明山

In Hangzhou, there is Daming Mountain, which is a dazzling pearl on the golden tourist route. Heralded as the “Huangshan Mountain of Zhejiang" (a major tourist destination in China, known for its scenery, sunsets, peculiarly-shaped granite peaks etc.), this treasure of China is unique in Jiangnan Region with its large number of peculiar-shaped peaks and stones, cascading waterfalls, broad plains, deep karst caves and a highland green lake.

Tianmu Mountain 天目山

Tianmu Mountain is a national nature education and research center. The mountain has set many world records. Because of its age-old Buddhist culture and special geology, it has well preserved abundant flora and fauna resources in the area and is home to the five only Zhejiang hop-hornbeams in the world.

Tianzhu Road 天竺路



Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

The century-old pilgrim road called Tianzhu Road is a pedestrian road closely connected to Buddhism. Isolated from the urban world’s bustle and hustle and flanked by time-honored temples, the road is reputed as “A Road Leading to the Southeast Buddhist Center.”

Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal 京杭大运河



The century-old Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through Hangzhou. Together with the Great Wall in Beijing and Kaner Well in Xinjiang, it is renowned as one of the greatest projects from ancient China and is the longest and oldest canal in the world. Hangzhou gained its fame because of West Lake and thrived because of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

Jingshan Tea 径山茶



Hangzhou has a fragrant tea variety called Jingshan Tea. Named after its production area, Jingshan Mountain, Jingshan Tea is one of the Chinese culture teas and gained its fame as early as in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Lu Yu, the sage of tea, wrote about it in the famous book, the Classic of Tea. The seeds of the tea were later brought to Japan by an eminent Japanese monk giving birth to the Japanese tea ceremony.

Kuiyuan Noodle Restaurant 奎元馆



There is a Hangzhou noodle restaurant called the Kuiyuan Noodle Restaurant which is popular among literati. The restaurant is the pioneer of making Pian Er Chuan, one of the Top Ten Noodle Dishes in China. The old restaurant has served all types of big shots from the political, educational and cultural circles.

Twenty-Three Lanes of Southern Song Dynasty Imperial Street 南宋御街二十三坊



Twenty-Three Lanes of Southern Song Dynasty Imperial Streets is where the daily life of old Hangzhou people can still be seen. It is the epitome of the old Hangzhou people’s lifestyle. Instead of oppressive skyscrapers, two to three storied buildings and stores line the broad streets full of life from a by-gone era.

Traditional Chinese medicine has a time-honored history. As early as ancient times, through the process of struggling with nature, traditional Chinese medicine was created. When searching for food, it was discovered that plants could relieve symptoms, which is the origins of traditional Chinese medicine; hot rocks or sand and earth wrapped up with furs or tree barks eased pain when warming oneself by a fire, which is how moxibustion came into being. It is also during the process of producing tools, that the ancient Chinese discovered the stabbing of some parts of the body can ease the pain of some other parts of the body, and that is how acupuncture come into being.
