The average summer temperature around Xin’an River, Hangzhou is 17 degrees which is consistent from morning until night. Here, one can experience clear waters, cool winds and ever-changing mists, giving you the dreamy impression of being in fairytale land.
Xin’an River is known in China for its “Baisha Mist”. The white mist rising from the river makes the surrounding scenery appear mysterious. In fact, in ancient times, it was famous not for the mist but for its water. In the Tang Dynasty, Li Bai, the great poet, wrote a poem called “Walking Along the Clear River”. It reads, “the water clears my heart as the limpidity of the water; it is so different from other waters but no one knows the reason; it is a mirror for pedestrians and a screen for birds.” Even though thousands of years have passed since the poem was written the river, however, is still the same as it was before.
The constant temperature of 17 degrees is thanks to the Xin’an River Hydroelectric Station which is the first to be built in China without the help of the government. The water spouting out of the bottom of the 70-meter-high dam goes around the city towards the east. The water from the deep Qiandao Lake keeps the temperature from 14 degrees to 17 degrees all year round and meets the national primary drinking water standards. For example, the famous drinking water “Nongfu Shan quan (Nongfu Mountain Spring)” is sourced from the water of the river to the whole country. Therefore, 17 degrees has become the symbol of the Xin’an River of Jiande City.

When darkness falls, lights appear spontaneously, one after the other, and make Xin’an River twinkle like an emerald jewel. With regards to the best place for viewing the fog, then Xiaya Village, known for its excellent water and mountains, excels all other places because it is here that the river bends in a “Z” like shape.
Xiaya Village, located in the middle of the Xin’an River of the “Two River and One Lake” Scenic Area, is a vital stop on the golden itinerary from Hangzhou to Qiandao Lake to Mount Huangshan. It has breath-taking views and is rich in culture. In ancient times, it used to be a significant business wharf and even still today retains many ancient houses and streets. In addition, it was the birthplace of the “Fengde Marquis” Sunshao who was a great figure of society and in memory of him, descendants keep the “Fengde Marquis Temple” and “Fuchun Hall” of Sun Family in integrity.
At dawn and at dusk, the village, mountains and forests peak through the white fog like that of a Chinese traditional landscape impression painting. If you get up early in the morning, you will find yourself entering fairyland where freckles of sunshine sprinkle through the fog.
When the sun sets, the sky glows colorful, clouds and fog shroud the green mountains and clear waters, and birds sing in the dense forest. With such stunning scenery, it’s no wonder the village is depicted artistically by many budding photographers and artists. When the fog disappears the little fishing village, turns tranquil and its white walls and brown tiles distinctively appear.
