Longjing Tea – The Greenest Pick 2017-05-11
The annual time for picking Longjing green tea leaves, one of the top ten renowned teas of China, has begun in Hangzhou and everywhere tea farmers are now busy picking and hand frying the famous leaves. If you wanted to take a sneak peek at how the farmers meticulously pick their verdant leaves from bushes nestled in undulating hills, or if you wanted to sample, at first hand, this year’s Longjing variety, then head to the following three tea villages which are known for their tea, tea culture and tea-related tourist attractions.

Meijiawu Village

Meijiawu Village is located at the roadside of Meiling Road in the western part of the West Lake scenic area and is one of the most important Longjing tea production sites. The village is surrounded by verdant mountains which are covered in a blanket of lush green tea trees which also explains the intoxicating and refreshing fragrance that often permeates the air. If you come here during the period from March to April, you will see tea farmers busy picking tea leaves, and if you are interested, you can join them in picking and hand-frying too.

Meijiawu Village

Currently, almost every household in Meijiawu Village lives on growing and selling tea leaves. Here in the village, one can see an assortment of teahouses dotted about as well as many farm-flavored inns and restaurants where you can taste the best products of nature. The village is not far from downtown Hangzhou so gathering your family and some of your friends to sip a cup of authentic and freshly picked Longjing tea, savor the rustic farm-flavored dishes or play mahjong while basking in the sunshine, will only leave you thirsty for more.

Longwu Tea Village

Longwu Tea Village is situated at the southwestern side of the West Lake and is adjacent to Zhijiang National Tourist Resort. The village, only 15 kilometers away from downtown, enjoys convenient transportation to Xixi National Wetland Park, Song Dynasty Town and White Dragon Pool.
There are over 1000 mu (1 mu equals 666 sq m) tea fields in the village and with vegetation coverage up to 50 percent and with a good eco-environment, the village is dubbed as a “natural oxygen bar.”

Longwu Tea Village

Many people say the place is the most beautiful backyard of Hangzhou and compared with Meijiawu Village, Longwu’s tea gardens are more stylish - they undulate along range upon range of hills and in doing so form a unique landscape. Longwu Village lies in the center of Xishan Tourist Path, the longest mountain tourist path in China. In the village is a paved path that stretches for 7.5 Km which is an ideal place for a spring outing, mountain hiking, camping, barbeque or angling …

Longjing Village

This village, which the noted Longjing green tea is named after, is acclaimed as the No. 1 Village of Tea’s Hometown. The village is world famous for the production of the top class West Lake Longjing tea. Here, you can wash your hands with Longjing spring water and like Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty you can also savor a cup of Mingqian Longjing tea which is unparalleled regarding its color, fragrance, taste and shape.

Longjing Village

Longjing Tea Village is located at the southwestern side of West Lake Scenic Area. Surrounded by mountains on all four sides, the village goes downwards from north to south and is home to over 800 mu highland tea gardens. On the northwest side of the village are three peaks which form a natural protection screen preventing the intrusion of piercing northwest winds; on the south of the village are Nine Creeks which is deep and wide, and leads directly to Qiantang River, making the summer’s southeasterly wind easy to reach the village and therefore providing an advantageous environment for Longjing tea to grow.

The Longjing tea leaves produced in the village top all other types of Longjing tea and it is said that Emperor Qianlong spoke highly of the variety after having sampled it during one of this inspection tours to Jiangnan. For a cup of the best Longjing green tea, Longjing Village is a place not to be missed.
