Hangzhou’s Enchanting Wetlands 2017-05-11
Most people have heard of Xixi National Wetland Park, which is a landmark of Hangzhou, an urban wetland carrying profound culture and a witness to Hangzhou’s prosperous history. The wetlands enjoy the same fame as the West Lake and the Xiling Seal-Engravers’ Society, and the popular Chinese film “If You Are the One” was also shot here, and in doing so has brought all kinds of fame to the wetlands, but what fewer people know is that, besides Xixi, there are a host of other enchanting wetlands nestled in Hangzhou.

Hangzhou Xixi National Wetland Park



Xixi National Wetland Park is the first national wetland in China, which is also an AAAAA level scenic area. Xixi shares the fame of the Three Xi’s together with West Lake (Xihu) and Xiling Seal-Engravers’ Society. Nearly 70% of the park is covered with rivers, ponds, lakes and wetlands. Islets scatter in and amongst the crisscross river network like an abundance of stars.

The four traditional festivals: Plum Blossom Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Red Persimmon Festival and Reeds Festival are respectively featured with the characteristics of spring, summer, autumn and winter. At this time of the year, visitors can admire the reeds rippling in the breeze.

Yuhang South Lake Wetland



South Lake, an artificial lake first constructed 1,800 years ago in the Xiping Period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, is an important reservoir of the Dongtiao River. In the wetland, the water surface covers approximately 4 sq km and together with a causeway, three islands and the mountains on the south, this creates the most marvelous landscape.

North Lake is a significant route for migrating birds flocking to Zhejiang. In the classic wetland landscape, moderate temperatures, luscious plants and an affluent supply of fish all aid in attracting the migrant birds during winter. Reeds dance to the autumn breeze and the stunning wetland setting is alluring to any budding photographer.

Qiandao Lake Wetland



Qiandao Lake is a large artificial reservoir which also functions as a wetland, a source of drinking water, hydroelectric power, breeding, irrigating and sight-seeing spot. The lake is also one of the national key scenic areas and one of the biggest forest parks in China.

Surrounded by mountains and aquatic plants, the splendid lake possesses a total of 1,078 islands of different shapes and appearances. The emerald green lake reflects the gestures of the towering mountains and deep valleys and the intricate network of rivers forms a great labyrinth. Qiandao Lake gains its fame as a picturesque landscape with verdant mountains, beautiful lakes, peculiar caves and grotesque rocks.

Fuchun River Guru-Guru Islet Provincial Wetland



Guru-Guru Islet is a deserted Islet in the middle of Fuchun River. The wetland is centered on Guru-Guru Islet and consists of nearby water areas and river banks. They all together occupy an area of 0.894 square kilometers. The park possesses an ecological landscape of rivers, marshland, floodplain, islets, fish pond, meadow and beach.

Due to seasonal floods, the villagers applied extensive farming method on the island. The causeways, fish ponds, terraces and forest belts they have built now become the unique landscape of the islet.
