Cool Yourself with Lotus Flowers

It is in the summer that the city’s eye-catching lotus flowers come into full bloom around the West Lake. Their beauty has been praised by poets and painters during the past millennium and the best place in which to view them is at Quyuan Garden where you will also see the Nine Bent Bridge zigzagging its way along a sea of lotus blossom. The scene of green leaves and pinkish-red flowers set against a backdrop of verdant rolling hills evokes an ancient world adorned by Chinese ruling elites and scholars. This scene heralded  as Breeze-Ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden (曲院风荷), , is one of the Top Ten Views of the West Lake. In such a poetic and picturesque environment you can capture many a moment and with the air saturated with aromatic fragrances romantic sensations will easily be triggered. Time your visit well either during the morning or at dawn to avoid crowds of tourists and of course the summer heat.

Hangzhou's iconic flower is known as 'Sweet Osmanthus' and it usually bursts into bloom between late September and early October. During the recent National Day Holiday, large numbers of citizens and tourists in Hangzhou went sightseeing in scenic areas where they had the chance to enjoy the scent of the flower in and around the city. Here is a selection of sites for Sweet Osmanthus viewing in Hangzhou:

Hangzhou Children's Park (儿童乐园)

The Hangzhou Children's Park, more often called Hangzhou Manlong Guiyu Park, has the largest number of Sweet Osmanthus trees in the city. More than 4,000 of these trees make the Children's Park the most crowded place in Hangzhou to view the flowers in autumn. However, what makes the park special is not the large quantity of Sweet Osmanthus trees but the delicacies that are made from the sweet-scented flowers. There are an increasing number of family restaurants emerging in nearby areas that specialize in Sweet Osmanthus food such as Sweet Osmanthus porridge, Sweet Osmanthus cake and drinks distilled from Sweet Osmanthus. It has become a tradition among locals to hold a festival each year in celebration of Sweet Osmanthus coming to bloom.

Toward the entrance are huge annual plantings in swirling patterns and there is a fountain in front of a flower-petal-shaped garden filled with color. During autumn, people come to see Osmanthus blossoms. Do not feel despair if you cannot make it during fall, for it exhibits a wealth of other plants all year round.

Lingyin Temple(灵隐寺)

The Lingyin Temple is known as one of the most prestigious Buddhist temples in China. While tourists come in admiration of the exclusive and transcendent spirit they may find themselves surrounded by lush green Sweet Osmanthus trees bearing tiny delicate yellow flowers. Warm yourself up with palatable cuisines in Yuhang

Hangzhou’s winter is long and chilly. To battle against the cold, locals usually flock into the suburban Yuhang to feast on mutton and fish during the Yuhang Cuisine Festival (余杭美食节). Along the cuisine street flanked by countless restaurants, you can sample a great variety of delicacies, such as stewed mutton, black fish, steamed turtle, roast duck and chicken soup, as well as various snacks and desserts. They are so delicious that the food-obsessed populace from Shanghai will stream in.

Walk into painting-like snow scenery along Broken Bridge

West Lake displays different charms in different weather. For the wonderful scenery of the lake, the sunny lake is not as pretty as the rainy lake; the rainy lake is not as pretty as the moonlit lake and the moonlit lake is not as pretty as the snowy lake. The Broken Bridge looks exceedingly beautiful when carpeted with a thin layer of snow. Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge, one of West Lake's Ten Scenes, was selected to represent its fantastic snow scenery. The tranquil West Lake will sink into sweet dreams like a mysterious sleeping beauty wearing a white dress. The pavilions, arched bridges, pagodas, causeways and islands will all be fringed with lavish white lace, while distant hills clad in white, grow more enchanting. Stroll along this bridge and the famous Bai Causeway will make you feel like you have entered into a traditional Chinese ink painting. Any photo taken from any angle, will be exceptionally attractive at this time.
