Illuminated Hangzhou 2017-06-27
The beauty of Hangzhou is unrivaled and illustrates its beauty in differing ways in different situations. For example, the West Lake showcases varied types of scenic beauty depending on the weather - be it sunny, rainy or snowing. It is during the nighttime, however, that the West Lake appears to be the most spectacular. The charms of a city may vary from season to season, but well-lit scenic spots offer a year-round pleasant ambiance. The following sights are indispensable in a quest to take in the best nighttime views in Hangzhou.

“City • Water • Light” Themed Light Show – Qianjiang New City

On the river banks of Qiantang River between No.1 Qianjiang New City and San Bao Ship Lock, on the façade of riverside buildings one can find scenes drawn by use of over thousands of lights, welcoming visitors from all corners of the world. This nearly 10-kilometer-long light show is designed to take advantage of the coming together of three foundations - the city design, water and light.

In the light show, Chinese, Jiangnan-style, Hangzhou and Qianjiang New City elements are well presented.

The light show impressively starts off by displaying the national flag of the G20 countries. Sceneries unique to Hangzhou such as “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon”, “Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge” and “Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal – Hangzhou Section” take turns to show off their beauty.

The famous verse by Su Dongpo that describes the beauty of the West Lake is also employed as a testament to ancient sentiment about the city landmark –

“The shimmering ripples delight the eye on sunny days.
The Dim hills present a rare view in rainy haze.
West Lake compares to Xi Zi at her best.
She is gorgeous richly clothed or plainly dressed.”

The show also uses modern cultural elements such as the classic children’s favorites such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, in addition to the Chinese Su Wukong and giant panda.
