The Summer's Coolest Locations… 2017-06-27
The Beginning of Summer, one of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar, is officially here and as one of the Four Furnace* Cities in China, Hangzhou is literally glowing in all directions. However in spite of the city’s stifling heat Hangzhou still manages to offer its residents and visitors a wealth of scenic spots – some of this summer’s coolest locations.

*The term ‘Furnace Cities’ is used to refer to the hottest cities in China

Heshang Village (河上村)

Heshang Village is located in Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou. The word “Heshang” also means monk in Chinese which explains the village’s ancient connection to monks. It is believed that during the Five Dynasties and late Tang Dynasty there was a popular Guangfu Temple that held over a hundred monks but besides offering Buddhist services, these monks also opened a shop which is where the village is now. The shop was, back then, named Monks (Heshang) Shop and the name was used to refer to a village that emerged later which is the Heshang Village as we know it now.

In Heshang Village visitors can, either hike in and amongst the leafy green mountains, stay at one of its many characteristic guesthouses, or watch a performance of Bench Dragon Dancing - a national intangible cultural heritage. Whichever you decide - a trip to Heshang Village is a cool haven for resting the mind, body and soul.

Shangougou (山沟沟)

Hangzhou’s Shangougou Scenic Area is located in Yuhang District (余杭区), 40 kilometers northwest of Hangzhou. The No.1 peak in Hangzhou – the 1,095-meter-high Yaotou Mountain (窑头山) and the No.2 peak – the 1,025-meter-tall Hongtao Mountain (红桃山) reside here and both are important sources of Taihu Lake (太湖).

The Shangougou Scenic Area is rich in tourist resources and is an excellent ecological environment with a wealth of plant and animal species. 95% of the area is devoted to vegetation which, together with its extensive resources, has formed an elaborate environment and a unique “Kangle Style” climate (Kangle 康乐型 literally means healthy and happy.)

Fu Chun Tao Yuan (富春桃源)

Fu Chun Tao Yuan boasts many natural features but it is its large scale of wild oak chestnut forest, hills, caves, villages and lakes that make it the perfect place to keep cool this summer. Jiuxiao Green Cave has a constant temperature of 18 degrees which makes it one of the coolest hide-outs in town.

Slow Life Experience Zone of Fuchun River

Awaiting you in the Slow Life Experience Zone of Fuchun River is the leisurely pace of rural life. Embracing the natural beauty of its streams and rivers and listening to the chirping of cicadas in guesthouses like that of Luci Earth Lodge, Shi She Xiang Zhang, will breeze you through the hot summer nights. Away from the city’s hustle and bustle you can enjoy the slow pace of life and feel cool in and amongst the locals of Luci Old Street.

Tianping Village (天坪村)

Tianping Village, located north of Chun’an, resides at the top of the mountain so it is no wonder it has the highest altitude around and sustains temperatures in summer to around 18 to 20 degrees. There are only 148 families living in the village who are accompanied by ancient pine trees, ecological valleys with springs and the Thousand Acres of Fields which was used to train soldiers by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. What is really cool about the village is that you can visit a farmer’s home and be in for a tasty treat of locally cooked produce such as corn stuffed buns and dried bamboo shoot soup with bacon.

Daming Mountain (大明山)

With high mountains and deeper than deep valleys the gap between the landforms in Daming Mountain can be as large as 1 kilometer, which are also highlighted by broad views with steep hills and mountain ranges. It is named “Little Mount Huang” of Zhejiang because its climatic and geological conditions are the same as Mount Huang, which is a frequent subject of traditional Chinese paintings and literature, as well as modern photography. Its mountains are as green as emeralds and its wondrous pines, peculiarly-shaped stones, sea of clouds and mountain groups are endless.
