Hangzhou Echoes China’s Ancient Music 2017-06-27
This spring Hangzhou will be hosting, until April 15, an Antique Musical Instrument Exhibition. Over 120 instruments from Central Plain will be on display and through its organisers, Henan Museum and Hangzhou Southern Song Dynasty Official Kiln Museum, the exhibition aims to show the rest of the world the charm of China's ancient music and its instruments.

Central Plain* is a historical term referring to the region along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, which in general includes Henan Province, southeastern Shanxi Province, southern Hebei Province, western Shandong Province, northwestern Jiangsu Province and northern Anhui Province.

Since ancient times, China has been reputed as ‘The Nation of Music’ and Central Plain is known as its birthplace. Instruments unearthed in Central Plain, and now on display in Hangzhou, perfectly echo China's ancient music because they come in all varieties and represent all of China’s dynasties (starting from the New Stone era through to the Song, Yuan, Ming and the Qing Dynasties).

An exceptional 126 pieces of antique musical instruments of 57 different groups are on display and all on loan from Henan Museum. Among these exhibits are 14 first class and 19 second &third class cultural relics. One mind blowing piece, a national treasure as well, is the 9,000 year old bone flute unearthed in Henan in 1987. Other note-worthy treasures include the 5,000-year-old Tao Xun (an ancient egg-shaped wind instrument) and Bianzhong (an ancient Chinese musical instrument consisting of a set of bronze bells) from Western Zhou.
