Cool Summer Escapes to Beat the Heat (Ⅰ) 2017-06-27

After the low temperatures the plum rain season and the arrival of super typhoon Chan-Hom brought with them to the region, the true dog days of the summer- San Fu Tian in Chinese- are upon us. Usually experienced in the months of July and August, this is the time of the year when the temperature sends the mercury soaring, and it is estimated that this year’s San Fu Tian will last 40 days, with the average temperature soaring to 34 degrees centigrade. Fortunately, finding a retreat to relax isn’t an impossible task in Hangzhou.

The title of ‘scene of the season’ may belong to showy lotus flowers in full bloom across the city, most famous of them found at West Lake, but this very title comes at the price of popularity- throngs of people out for the very same thing. For those looking for something serene that affords a beautiful scene and lower temperatures, the following are tried and tested offerings.

Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden (曲院风荷)
In summer, much of the surface of West Lake is decorated with pink lotus blossoms and green lotus leaves. The unique scenery is the best West Lake can offer in summer. “Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden” is an age-old attraction, one of “Traditional Top Ten Views of West Lake”. It’s said that back in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), there used to be a winery in Quyuan Garden where a large number of lotus flowers were planted. In summer breeze, the delicate fragrance of lotus flowers was intermingled with the tasteful bouquet of wine and spread far and wide, hence the name — Breeze-ruffled Lotus in Quyuan Park. It’s indeed a supreme joy to have a cup of tea in a teahouse while enjoying the pink lotus blossoms and green lotus leaves dancing in breeze.

Bamboo-lined Path at Yunqi (云栖竹径)

Hidden in the western foot of Wutai Hill (五台山) in the West Lake Scenic Area, this is a wonderful place to find respite from the summer day. In ancient times, some beautiful clouds flying from afar lingered in the area, hence the name - Yunqi (Cloud Lingering). Renowned for its dense bamboo forest, the scenery "Bamboo-lined Path at Yunqi" ranks first in the new ‘Top Ten Views of West Lake’. Walking into Yunqi, one will see a long stone-paved footpath, flanked by innumerable bamboo trees, winding its way through the forest. Even on the hottest of summer days, Yunqi manages to provide good shade and comfort to the weariest.
