188 Works of Art on Plum Blossom are on Display in Hangzhou Museum 2017-06-27

In traditional Chinese culture, plum blossom symbolizes strength, perseverance and the ability to endure hardship since it blooms vibrantly during the chilly winter. For these unique qualities, plum blossom was favored by ancient scholars and has been frequently depicted in many works of art.

To correspond to the blooming plum blossom in Hangzhou, Hangzhou Museum is holding its first plum blossom exhibition through 15th March. During the exhibition, on display are 188 Chinese ink paintings and pieces of pottery decorated with plum blossoms, ninety percent of which are at their first public appearance.

Most of the exhibits are from the private collection of Gao Yehou (高野侯) — a noted art collector of the Republic of China (1911-1949), and some are works of Jin Nong (金龙) — one of “Eight Yangzhou Weirdos (扬州八怪)”. “Eight Yangzhou Weirdos” refer to eight painters from Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Because they were so crazy about painting that they gave up their promising future in official career, people thought they were weird.
