Wintersweets Blooming in Hangzhou Botanical Garden 2017-06-27

Wintersweet is an ornamental flowering plant endemic to China. It is strongly scented and characterized by spirally-arranged yellow petals. It usually blooms in late winter and early spring when it’s cold. Because wintersweet blooms before leaves, its flowers and leaves never meet. For its unique quality of blooming vibrantly during the coldest time, it’s renowned as one of “Three Friends of the Coldness” in Chinese Literature with pine and bamboo. The plant enjoys a high prestige in China.

On 8th January (Laba Festival), more than 1, 000 wintersweets came into bloom in Lingfeng Scenic Area in Hangzhou Botanical Garden. Their tiny yellow flowers are hanging on the tree, sending forth intoxicating fragrance. Their flowering period will last about a month. Sometime around the Spring Festival (31th January, 2014) when they are in full bloom, is the best time to view these beautiful flowers and smell their sweetness. Plum blossom in Lingfeng, however, is still in bud. Visitors may have to wait for a few of days before they bloom, probably around February.
