Let’s Go Cycling — Best Cycling Routes in Hangzhou 2017-03-20
As one of Eight Ancient Capitals of China and one of the world-famous scenic resorts, it’s no exaggeration to say that in Hangzhou, there is a scenic spot every step you take. Among these scenic spots, some scatter right beside roads, and some hide in mountains. Hence, cycling has been widely accepted as the best way to travel around Hangzhou. Here is some representative cycling routes

Route One: Longjing (龙井)
Yanggong Causeway (杨公堤)— Longjing Village (龙井村)
Degree of Difficulty: ★★★
Landscape: level road + slopes
Best Time: in the evening
Distance: 5.6 kilometers
Tips: This route is perfect for evening cycling. Be sure to wear helmet in case of the cliffy slopes and abrupt turnings. Shops are available at the top of the mountain. You may want to avoid Wednesday and Thursday when it’s crowded.


Route Two: Nine Creeks Meandering through a Misty Forest (九溪烟树)
Jiuxi on Zhijiang Road (之江路九溪) — Yangmei Hill (杨梅岭)
Degree of Difficulty: ★★★
Landscape: level road + slopes
Best Time: during the daytime or in the evening
Distance: 6.2 kilometers
Tips: What makes the route unique is its idyllic view and fresh air. As one of “New Top Ten Views of West Lake”, “Nine Creek Meandering through a Misty Forest” is renowned for its idyllic view. The fresh air can make your cycling along the route more relaxing. In the evenings dimly moonlight and lamplight enhance its picturesque view even more. Be aware that there are stone steps. Make sure you take a bicycle light with you and girls should go in groups.


Route Three: Nine Creeks and Eighteen Gullies (九溪十八涧)
Nine Creeks and Eighteen Gullies — Longjing Village
Degree of Difficulty: ★★★
Landscape: cobblestone road + eight gullies +slopes
Best Time: during the daytime or in the evening
Distance: about 6 kilometers
Tips: Because there are no road lights along the route, please bring a bicycle light and go in groups. There are eight gullies cutting the cobblestone road into several parts, with each two or three meters long. Under the circumstances, you may have to carry your bicycle across the gullies.


Route Four: Shi Li Lang Dang (十里琅珰)
Shi Li Lang Dang — Five Cloud Mountain (五云山)
Degree of Difficulty: ★★★
Landscape: slopes
Best Time: during the daytime
Distance: about 5 kilometers
Tips: It’s a challenge for all riders. You have to ride on bumpy mountain road with a large amount of slopes. Sometimes you may meet some steps which need you to carry your bicycle. Pavilions are available on the route where you can have some rest.


Route Five: Wen Tao Road (闻涛路)
The First Qiantang River Bridge (钱江一桥) — The Fourth Qiantang River Bridge (钱江四桥)
Degree of Difficulty: ★
Landscape: level road
Best Time: during the daytime or in the evening
Distance: 10.2 kilometers
Tips: This route is ideal for evening cycling. The road is smooth and a good route for both bicycle touring and bicycle racing. Pay attention to the traffic.


Route Six: Shiyan Mountain in Wenyan Town Xiaoshan District(萧山区闻堰镇石岩山)
Jingcheng Road (金城路) — Shiyan Mountain (石岩山)
Degree of Difficulty: ★★★
Landscape: level road + slopes
Best Time: during the daytime
Distance: 11.2 kilometers
Tips: Shiyan Mountain is the steepest mountain in Xiaoshan District. Several hundred of meters ahead the road, it will become rather cliffy. When you go uphill, it’s recommend for you to adjust your breathing to a stable condition and match your pedaling with your breathing. Don’t speed up or slow down suddenly. Remember to bring your helmet and choose bicycle with large flywheel.


Route Seven: Bicycle Lane Around Xianghu Lake in Xiaoshan District (萧山区湘湖环湖自行车道)
The parking lot of Cross-lake Bridge Museum (跨湖桥博物馆停车场)— Cross-lake Bridge (跨湖桥)
Degree of Difficulty: ★
Landscape: level road
Best Time: during the daytime or in the evening
Distance: 7.8 kilometers
Tips: The bicycle lane consists of the main stem and the auxiliary road. The main road is clockwise, and auxiliary road is anti-clockwise.


Route Eight: Bicycle Lane Around Xinsha Island in Fuyang District (富阳新沙岛环岛骑行)
Xinsha Island is only one-hour drive away from Hangzhou. There are two bicycle routes around the island. One is five-kilometer-long round-the-island highway which is quite smooth. And the second route: the eight-kilometer-long cyclo-cross route proves to be the favorite of enthusiasts of cyclo-cross.


Route Nine: Tonglu Village Route (桐庐乡村骑行)
There are three routes in Tonglu. Along the routes, you can enjoy the majesty of Fuchun River and visit historical heritage sites.

Route one: Cycling in Town
the Center Plaza — Luci Village (芦茨村)
Distance: 20 Kilometers

Route Two: Cycling along Fuchun River
Meirong (梅蓉) — Yangshanfan Village (阳山畈村)
Distance: 23 kilometers

Route Three: Cycling in Village
Yangshanfan Village (阳山畈村)— Red Lantern Village Homeland  (红灯笼乡村家园)
Distance: 18 kilometers
