Brief of Huqingyutang Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum
Located in the Hefang Street nearby West Lake, the museum opened to the public in 1991. It is located inside the ancient building complex of Hu Qing Yu Tang — a famous traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy, which has long been honored as "the Medicine House of the South of the Yangtze River". Built by the renowned businessman Hu Xueyan of the late Qing Dynasty, the ancient complex is one of the rare commercial buildings of the late Qing Dynasty at home and abroad.
In the museum there are numerous jars preserved with all sorts of concoctions from a variety of plants to squares of tiger-bone and deer-horn gelatin. You can also visit the nearby clinic to get your qi (energy) diagnosed and watch your herbal prescription being prepared in the pharmacy.
Finally why not wrap up the visit with a TCM-inspired meal at the restaurant nearby the museum, a mouth-watering experience that balances sweet, sour, bitter and pungent tastes. So if you have a healthy interest in both architecture and Chinese medicine this ‘King of Medicine’ as it was known in the 19th century is a good place to visit.
