    Brief of Liangzhu National Relics Park

    The Liangzhu archeological site is one of the most fundamental in China and the culture it has unearthed has also played a significant role in the development of Chinese culture. Built on this impressive site is the Liangzhu National Relics Park which is positioned in a suburban area north of Hangzhou city in Liangzhu (良渚) and Pingyao (瓶窑) Town. The park is the core area of the Liangzhu archeological site and so far 135 other plots have been discovered with the area, under protection, totaling 42 sq km.

    The park, constructed in 2009 and estimated to be completed by 2016, incorporates many functions but its main purpose is in protecting, utilizing, developing and displaying cultural relics.

    The Liangzhu National Relics Park is centered in Mo Jiao Shan Liangzhu Ancient City (莫角山良渚古城) and spreads to the buffer area which includes the following nominated heritage sites: Fan Shan (反山), Hui Guan Shan (汇观山), Tang Shan (塘山) and Yao Shan (瑶山). Via methods such as cross section demonstration and through recovery of excavated sites visitors are therefore able to delve into the Liangzhu Culture.

    There are three sections according to the landscape of the area which are Liangzhu Ancient City Area, Outer Ancient City Area and Liangzhu Square Area. Inside the Liangzhu Ancient City Area are important historical sites pertaining to the Liangzhu culture such as Mo Jiao Shan and Fan Shan both of which preserve the natural highlands that were used as the early gathering place of Liangzhu people and also contain high artificial earth mounds built in the later stages of Liangzhu Culture.

    The outer Liangzhu City Area is mainly comprised of wetlands, water areas and some small altars whereas the Liangzhu Square Area is to be built into a tourism function zone with villages and creative industrial parks.

    In accordance with the meaning of ‘Liangzhu’ – Mei Li Zhou (Beautiful Islet), the Liangzhu archaelogical site, located in a plain with a river network and sub-tropical climate is to incorporate an S-shaped green belt 20 meters wide from east to west and 1100 meters long from south to north to lead visitors onto a journey of cultural discovery. Whether on foot or by boat, either way, Liangzhu unearths a cultural experience of a lifetime.
