    Brief of Grand Canal,Hangzhou Section

Jiangnan Canal-Hangzhou Section is one of the oldest, best-preserved sections of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is still in use. From north to south, it passes along Shangtang River(上塘河), Zhonghe River(中河) and Longshan River(龙山河).

Construction of Jiangnan Canal-Hangzhou Section began in 1247. It became a key tributary of the Jiangnan Canal during the 14th century.

Jiangnan Canal-Hangzhou Section is one of the most beautiful sections of the Grand Canal. It passes along clusters of museums, temples, wharfs, historic relics, food streets and modern residential communities.

To fully enjoy the splendor of this canal, one can opt for biking, walking or cruising.

Jiangnan Canal (江南古运河)adopted advanced and manageable complex lock engineering in the Song Dynasty to deal with the shipping function of watercourse at different water levels. The complex lock uses the lock chamber which could adjust water level to bridge the height difference between upstream and downstream and achieve the smooth utilization of locks also greatly reduces the amount of water loss when vessels pass the lock, which is of great significance to the rivers with serious water shortage. The engineering structure and working principle of the complex lock are exactly the same with those of modern ship locks. A similar project did not occur in Europe until 300 years later. Therefore, Chang’an lock represented the advanced level of water conservancy and water transport of the world at that time.
