Brief of Hangzhou Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion

Rebuilt from abandoned industrial factories and covering an area of 3000 sq m, Hangzhou Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion was originally a textile factory, a cornerstone of Hangzhou's contemporary textile industry in the 20th century.

Opened to the public in 2011, this pavilion of museums is dedicated in showcasing a number of China's traditional crafts.  Listed as an important cultural site under protection, the pavilion allows you to witness at first hand the many detailed procedures involved in making these crafts, which include paper cutting, eggshell carving, silk knitting, west lake parasols, scissors and many more.

Once an old factory this pavilion is now a modern day workshop where visitors can appreciate the variety of skills that are needed to make such noteworthy items.  You can learn the whole process of making Tianzhu chopsticks and watch the amazing craft of forging Zhang Xiaoquan scissors, which involves 72 procedures, or see the exquisite craftsmanship in making Fuyang bamboo-paper.

On the spot demonstrations of steel embedding, nail pinning, engraving and design are just a few of the ingenious skills engineering you to have a try.  If you are feeling particularly creative then there are a number of crafts to try, be it embroidery, paper cutting, engraving  or wood carving,  anyone of these crafts will  make a day trip to the pavilion one to remember.

Like no other museum, this workshop pavilion is not only home to some outstanding pieces of China's history but it also provides you with an insight into the many skills that are needed to make these traditional Chinese pieces come alive.
