Brief of Jumping Fish at Jade Spring

Jade Spring, one of the three famous springs of Hangzhou, is located in a Jiangnan style court near Hangzhou Botanical Garden. The court used to be a Zen Buddhist Temple dating back to 1,500 years ago and later was reconstructed. The current court covers an area of 7,300 kilo meters. Decorated with painted walls, hollow windows, linked by passages, the court displays an unique structure of "a view within a view, a garden within a garden".

In the center of the court, you will see Jade Spring, a rectangular pond about 14 meters long, 10 meters wide and 3 meters deep. The water in the pond is as clear as jade, hence, it’s then named Jade Spring. There is no definite source of Jade Spring from which it issues out. For hundreds of years, crystal-clear water has been intermittently emerging out of the ground to form the pond.

In Song Dynasty, hundreds of ornamental fishes were put into the pond. Since then, it has become a perfect place for fish watching. Its unique view “Jumping Fish at Jade Spring (玉泉鱼跃)” has been cited as one of the “18 Scenes of West Lake” in Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Every year, a constant stream of people from both home and abroad come all the way here to watch fish.
