Brief of Three Temples at Tianzhu
Tianzhu Hill (天竺山) is famous for three old temples (Upper Tianzhu Temple, Middle Tianzhu Temple and Lower Tianzhu Temple) which together are called “Three Temples of Tianzhu” (天竺三寺) by local citizens. In the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Emperor named the three temples Faxi Temple (法喜寺), Fajing Temple (法净寺) and Fajing Temple (法镜寺) respectively. That’s how Faxi Temple got its name.
Among the three, Faxi Temple is the newest one, but still has a history of over 1,000 years. Fajing Temple(法镜寺) is the oldest with a history of more than 1,700 years. Three temples share similar history, if not the same, and are close to one another. What’s more, their Buddhist standpoints are the same, and their destinies are closely interconnected. So in history, this special region of Hangzhou was honored to be the Buddhist Heaven of Tianzhu (天竺佛国).
Faxi Temple is located at the foot of Baiyun Hill (白云山) which is covered with the white clouds all year round. The hill is the producing area of the famous tea — Bao Yun (Treasured Clouds, 宝云). Around the temple, there are Super-mercy Spring (大悲泉), Dream Spring (梦泉), Lizard Spring (蜥蜴泉), Huanying Well (幻应井), Zuochan Well (坐禅井) and Shixian Well (示现井).
Currently, Faxi Temple has six main constructions: Heavenly King Hall (天王殿), Yuantong Hall (圆通殿), the Grand Hall of the Great Sage (大雄宝殿), the Dining Room (斋堂), The Guest Room (客房) and Temple Gate (山门). In Heavenly King Hall, there is the marvelous statue of five-hundred arhats. Also, there are old Yulan plants and bamboo with a history of more than five hundred years.
