    Brief of Qiantang River Bridge

Qiantang River Bridge, a national monument, is located to the south of West Lake, over the Qiantang River (钱塘江), and near Pagoda of Six Harmonies. On Pagoda of Six Harmonies, one can get a good view of the double-decked Qiantang River Bridge.

A vital communication link, the 1,453-meter-long bridge was built on August 8th, 1934 and opened to traffic on September 26th, 1937. The Chinese are proud of the bridge, for it was designed by Mao Yisheng(茅以升, 1896-1989), a great Chinese engineer at a time when a number of foreign engineers dismissed its construction as an impossibility on account of the swift current and quicksand in the river. Furthermore, the bridge was the first such bridge ever built by the Chinese.
